Canyon Overlook Trail
The best short hike in Zion. One mile round trip to a huge view of the canyon, with no shuttle and no permit, but parking can be tough.
Before you go
- The trailhead is on the east side of the Zion–Mount Carmel Tunnel, just past the tunnel exit. Look for the small lot on the right.
- The lot holds only a handful of cars and fills early. Arrive near sunrise, or expect to park along the highway pullouts and walk.
- Large RVs and trailers need a paid escort through the tunnel. Check the size limits on the Zion website before you drive it.
- Some sections have drop-offs with railings. Keep kids close.
The hike
If you only have an hour in Zion, this is the hike. Canyon Overlook skips the shuttle lines entirely and ends at a viewpoint looking down the length of Pine Creek Canyon toward the main canyon.
The trail is short but has some character. You'll climb rock-cut steps, walk ledges with railings, and pass under an overhanging alcove before it opens up at the overlook.
Watch the video for the full walk, start to finish, so you know what to expect before you go.
Trail details last checked October 2026. Confirm current conditions with Zion National Park before your trip.
Gear I'd bring for this one
Wide-brim sun hat
Most of this trail is on open slickrock, and the overlook has no shade.
